When Rome fell, Europe was in turmoil!. Barbarians raided, pillaged, and killed the residents of villages across Europe and the few that got away alive couldn't grow food!. To find protection from these raids, villagers agreed to live in manors owned by wealthy lords!. The lords would employ knights to protect their manors and the citizens!. In return for protecting them, villagers would work the land owned by the lord and give him a percentage!. This became an effective economic system (people were fed and protected) and around the manor system, the social system (kings, lords, knights, peasants) and an identical political system (kings, nobles, peasants) were formed around it!. Finally, to keep everything in balance, the Church told everyone that where they were, they were meant to be there and one day, they would be rewarded for fulfilling their earthly duties faithfully!. So, none of the peasants revolted even after being treated so bad!. This is why feudalism worked so well!.

Feudalism developed from what happened after the fall of the empire, with the conquest of Europe by barbarians!.

With this conquest, private land ownership disappeared!. All land now belonged to the conquerors, who were also the only ones allowed to bear arms!. The conquerors now formed the nobility; the peasants were the conquered!.

This system was refined later, as the conquerors became culturally absorbed into western Europe!. When the conquerors became Catholic, the priestly class became part of the feudal order!. Monasteries came to own land donated to them (sometimes as a form of penance) by nobles; these monasteries came to rent land to peasants!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The lack of a central power!. Control went to the strongest man in each local area(strength being defined as combat ability, access to wealth or resources, or ability to lead others)!. These local strongmen eventually gave fealty to the strongest in the larger area and so on, until eventually the progression created a ruler of a vast territory, which would eventually become a country!. Time would allow these practices to become custom and eventually law!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When western Rome fell, there was no centralized power to take its place, so authority fell to decentralized rulers that ruled little kingdoms!. These decentralized rulers relied on feudalism and lord-retainer relationships to maintain order!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
