On a personal level it was 'Heil Hitler'!. In fact Hitler himself would use the salute with foreign dignitaries!.

Robert Boothby (later Lord Boothby) was sent to Berlin in 1935 to make diplomatic contact with Hitler!. He said he was made to enter Hitlers office from the most distant point and had to walk the length of the vast hall until he finally stood before Hitlers desk!. 'Der Fuhrer' did not look up from his signing of documents, and Bothby decided to sit down on a chair uninvited and wait for the German leader to acknowledge him!.

Eventually, Hitler suddenly threw down his pen and stood rigidly to attention!. Snapped his heels together, performed a straight armed Nazi salute and said "Hitler!"

Boothby slowly stood up, raised a lazy arm in no particular direction and said "Boothby!"

Some say this meeting was the end of serious diplomacy between the two ideologies, I think it was the final warning to Hitler that the English are not impressed by militaristic silliness!.!.!. or until Blair!.!.!. we weren't!Www@QuestionHome@Com
