When someone refers to ancient Rome, most of the time they are referring to the city!. The city of Rome was where the Senate, and the Caeser resided and ruled over the Roman Empire!. However the EMPIRE of Rome was what was spread throughout almost two thirds of the known world from the middle of Africa almost to the far eastern edge of Asia!. Most of the citizens of the Roman Empire had actually never been to the city of Rome itself!. They are two different parts of the same thing!. I hope that I helped you out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depend on how ancient you go!. Rome started as a village!. It grew into a city!. Then it became a city state, expanded into a republic, and then grew into an empire!.

As for your sentence: before +/- 50 BC the answer is 'republic', after +/- 50 BC it is 'empire'!. The empire started when August defeated his last opponent Anthony!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
