"Great" in this sense means how much influence a person had on history!. By this measure he had a deep and broad influence that lasted for centuries!.
He was bi-sexual, by the way, a fact that nearly all history books conveniently ignore!.
When he died very suddenly his generals fought for control of large pieces of territory!. Persia was too big for them to administer, so Persia resumed being ruled by Persians!. The Seleucid dynasty ruled from about present day Lebanon to what is now Syria, Israel, Jordan and parts of Iraq!.
The Ptolemies established a dynasty in Egypt, the most famous member of which was Cleopatra!.
The Greeks spread Greek culture, which included drama (Greeks invented this and built stone theatres all over the place!. They also erected very many public buildings, such as libraries, and they taught the Eastern world their ideas about science, technology, medicine, and philosophy!. Greek became the lingua franca of the Eastern Mediterranean!. Thanks to Alexander, the Greek and Roman world now had a first hand account of India, which spurred a trade in gems and cotton fabric and silks!. The Greek diet became common to the entire eastern Mediterranean, surviving centuries of conquest and invasion!. It is still the major diet there!.
The Greeks taught the Romans how to think, how to study rhetoric, taught them philosophy and the classics of Greek literature, and helped them to develop something of an imagination, a difficult feat for the very hard headed Romans!. In short, this is truly a great legacy!.
The unfortunate side of this is that many kings wanted to be another Alexander!. Napoleon was one of these, and Hitler a wannabe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes a product of his time but with his own influence and charisma!.

He took the united city states of Greece and conquered the Persian Empire, something the Greeks had wanted for years!.

This conquest and expansion he took the Greeks on placed all of the eastern mediterranean under one ruler, he showed kindness to enemies who surrendered to his armies and destroyed those who continued resistance!.

His rule allowed for increased trade both in and around the controlled areas!. The introduction to other religions and records of which the Greeks did not destroy!. Travel was allowed for those who could afford it to all over the territories!. These different cultures were to have some effect on the Greeks as well as their ideals and ways were to influence others!. This was especially prevalent in Egypt!.

His rule allowed access to different farming techniques, astrological information, apothecary and medical techniques and technology for a variety of different areas that the Greeks did not have!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
