There is no doubt that people today view President Lincoln as a very great president and surely he can be credited with the nation we have today!. However, I submit that this is not necessarily a positive thing!. As you well know, the States had every legal and Constitutional right and power to secede as noted by such as Vice President John C!. Calhoun in the 1828 Exposition; President Thomas Jefferson’s Kentucky Resolution; and James Madison’s Virginia Resolution!.” “By going against the Constitution and removing Habeas Corpus, issuing the two Executive orders termed Emancipation Proclamations and acting as if they were actual law, didn’t you realize that all of these acts were extra-Constitutional!? Did you have any idea that these acts, that in any other age would have resulted in your impeachment, would cause the deaths of more than 660,000 Americans of both the two countries of the Union and the Confederacy and that the end result would be the destruction of the Founders’ Constitution!?” I realize (reading the other responses) that it is unlikely that mine will be accepted with any grace!. Sadly, within another 20 years industrial development would have made slavery economically unrealistic in North America!. However, it is quite likely with the direction of the increasing powerful (primarily) Northern States the country would still have split into two different countries, one (the Union) increasingly strengthening the federal government and the other increasingly stressing a confederation of Strong States!.
