"April, 1865" by Jay Winik is a good book that pretty much explains the Civil War in an objective manner, as well as the events leading up to it!.

also, a good start is "Don't Know Much About History"!. This book will give you an overview of everything and might act as a springboard to look more in depth into specific time frames and events!.

"Miracle at Philadelphia" is about how our Constitution was formed!. I've yet to read it, but people have told me it's very informative!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well this book isnt specifically american history but it has alot to do with imperialism spreading from Europe to America and the views of imperialistic countries about their colonies!. It's Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad!. It's pretty tough reading!. Make sure to pay attention to the imagery and the detail of why things happen!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"Two Ocean War" by Samuel Elliot Morrison
A very readable history of the US NAvy in World War II!.
His section on the Guadalcanal Campaign is the best summary ever written of these very important battles!.

"A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn!. Extremely eye-opening!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
