The reason Durham and much of the North is not in Domesday Book, is because a separate Domesday Book of the north was compiled and published at a later date - see link below!. !. !.

Durham is very old and has some Roman as well as Saxon remains - see link below!. !. !.

hope that helps!.

and no, I had no idea either until I found out only a few mins ago on the Internet!. See, it's true, you are never too old to learn something new!. I'm now 67 and racing towards my first century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Domesday survey covered all of England as it existed in 1086, which included a small part of what is now Wales, some of Cumbria, but excluded the present day Northumbria!. The entries for some major towns at the time like the important Winchester and London also failed to make it into the book!.

The whole border region with Scotland was still a contestable area for many years to come!. It was largely ignored in the Domesday book because such a large area of that region was considered no-mans land, and had been laid to waste by many years of cross-border conflict!. It wasnt until around the 15th or 16th centuries that the current border with Scotland was finally agreed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'll take a guess, and I'm not saying I'm right, but it might be because Durham was a principality at the time (and I think it still might be to an extent), so probably didn't have to partake in paying taxes!. also, the Scotland-England border has changed quite a bit over time, so maybe that accounts for some of Northumberland!.

Holy cow!. This link suggests I'm right!. http://home!.clara!.net/heureka/sussex/dom!.!.!.

That'll be a first!. Great question though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
