By "America", you mean the US!? The controversy was (and remains) different in each of the American countries!.

For many in the US it was a resurfacing of an argument that was already ready hot and active in the pre-revolutionary Continental Congress where the foundation of the US was established!. Even before they were written, there was much finger pointing over the hypocrisy of allowing slavery in a country which declared "All men are created equal!." There was also much maneuvering to preserve agricultural traditions founded in the European feudal era where slavery was a tradition more ancient than their trade with Africa or knowledge of people from other continents!.

In the last Continental Congress (1789), history shows us the controversy was set aside for the sake of heading off the anarchy of a newly formed country which still had no uniting structure!.

Less than a hundred years later, the controversy resurfaced with a vengeance!Www@QuestionHome@Com
