The Compromise of 1850 primarily came about because California applied for statehood as a free state!. This would upset the balance of free and slave states in Congress!. Congress passed the Compromise which included 5 laws:

2!. Texas would give up claims to New Mexico for $10 million
3!. New Mexico and Utah would decide for themselves whether to have slavery
