Roman empire around Cesaer, before and after, because they owned pretty much all the world that they knew about!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think you should reconsider your position!. Although technically the largest empire by size and population, Britain did not hold such sway over her empire for very long!. Britains most prosperous and populous colonies, the 13 American colonies, broke away only 14 years after Britain gained Canada and the American interior from France!. 14 years does not make the world's mightiest empire!.

In fact, by 1815 and its clash with Napoleon, the British Empire was rather small!. More than 80 percent was Canada, which at the time held only a few hundred thousand inhabitants and was largely unsettled!. Aside from the growing influence on the Indian coast, tiny settlements around Cape Town, New South Wales, Tasmania, Malacca and some Carribbean and Mediterrean outposts made up the majority of the rest!.

Now, between 1815 and 1914 Britain's empire would grow, to include Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana and South Africa and the rest of Australia, New Zealand and her new gem, India!. It would pressure China in the Opium Wars and would grow to a position of unrivaled dominance by the 1830s, and this would last until the end of the 19th century when German and Russian pressures really became evident (see Russia and Britain's "Great Game")

But World War I was fought partially because Britain so insisted on alliances that risked stability to defend its empire status!.

After WWI the Empire reached its height but it was coming apart at the seams!. India clamoured for independence, Ireland fought against Britain and South Africa could tolerate British oversight no more!. Canada moved to distance herself, Iraq, Jordan and the gulf states were troublesome!.!. by 1931 Britain was spinning off half of its empire: New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Newfoundland, and Ireland all became independent of London!. By WWII India (and Pakistan) had wrested themselves from the Empire, Malaysia would soon follow along with most of the small Southeast Asian colonies, and the Egyptians would take over the Suez Canal after some 70 years of British oversight!.

THIS is the world's best empire ever to grace God's earth!? It sure didn't last very long!. No sooner did it start was it coming undone!.

At least Rome held many of its provinces for 400-600 years!. Britain could only hold similar provinces or tiny colonies for 50-250 years!.

The Russian Empire spanned Eurasia and has held much of it under sway for around 200 years!.

The Mongols created a very loosely-tied overlordship for about 60 years, the second largest in the world after the British Empire!. Yet within 80 years the Empire was split into quarrelling states and civil war would lead to disintegration within 150 years!.

The Spanish Empire was large and held together for nearly 300 years (early 1500s until early 1800s, the 19th century was a painful crash for Spain), so it could rival the British Empire in longevity if not better it!.

France may not have had the influence of Britain, but it rivaled it's anglophone neighbor for centuries and the France can at least claim one powerful acquisition that Britain never could - Europe!.

Even Germany created a small empire for about 40 years from the 1880s until 1918!.

The Persian Empire was vast and lasted for centuries, as did the Ottoman Empire!.

Yet if the life of an empire is an indication of its power, all of these would then pale in comparrison to the Celestial Empire, China's dominance in the East for nearly two thousand years until the coming of colonizing Europeans!.

I'd have to go with the other repliers though, Rome built the definitive empire, and held it for centuries!. Britain is at best a distant second!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

British was 'obviously' not the best!. the Romans is the correct answer!. and it would be more appropriate to say most successful, as an irish person and of having over 800 years of brutality on this island because of the british "empire" it is extremely hard and insulting to call the british empire the best, except for causing famines, plagues, slavery, religious divisions, yes!.!.!. yes they were the best at all them obvious, they were/are so good the effects of it are still being felt in ireland!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Roman empire lasted longer, greek empire went farther, but everyone always forgets about the spanish empire, or the mongolian empire!. there was the french empire under nepoleon!. but Roman would probably be second!.

You could always consider the American Empire but that in turn brings up multiple political debates!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
