1!. Early Christianity expected the return of Jesus as a triumphant king in the immediate/near future!. (And anyone who threatened the power of the Caesars was considered a risk to the stability of the empire)!.

2!. A strong, highly organised military and unifed and well regulated economic system!.

3!. Probably a lot of things!. Most probably the deterioration of good central government in Rome because of corruption and lack of administation skills

4!. That the kind of leaders that are good at "building" empires are not necessarily the best leaders to "preserve" or "maintain" an empire!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1!. The Roman emperors expected religious devotion!. Of course Christians felt they had a higher loyalty!. The were not inclined to support or fight for Rome and the emperors!. Some of the worst empire wide persecutions of Christians came in the 250's AD when the empire was assailed on all sides!. Emperors Decius and Valerian tried to force all of the people to swear devotion (make sacrifice to) the emperor, and many Christians refused!. These early Christians paid the price for their stubbornness!.
2!.Mutual economic benefit / prosperity was the glue and the means by which the armies were paid to enforce the Pax Romana - the state of affairs when Rome held the hegemony over the entire Mediterranean world!.
3!.Economic instability in the 3rd century led to problems paying the soldiers - some 300,000 of them!. They began to revolt and plunder Roman territory!. There were no more contiguous wealthy lands to plunder!. Barbarian attacks came from Germanic tribes along the Rhine and Goths along the Danube while the Sassanid Persians under Shapur I were resurgent and attacking in the East as well!.

4!.In the later Roman empire wealth had become all too concentrated in the hands of a few obscenely wealthy men!. Small landholders who had fought for Rome to preserve their land in the days of the Roman Republic had become a distant memory!. Soldiers had become mercenaries who fought openly for pay rather than landholders!.
Human nature is that people are greedy!. The rich keep wanting more and more!. They make sure the government system preserves their vast holdings!. The people that actually do the work and serve in the army have little incentive to fight to keep the rich men in their lofty positions!.
Men fighting for their own homes and land are far more effective than men fighting for pay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
