Do you mean what would Chaucer say if he were strolling through New York and saw the Empire State Building!? My guess is he would say, "Gad, yon towyr be feckyng tall!"Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were no buildings in the modern sense!. Multiple dwellings started with the growth of cities, when medieval times were coming to an end!. I believe the term "building" was first used in the nineteenth century, brought about by industrialization and the large migrations from the countryside to urban centers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

to answer some of the others!.!.!. In old english (pre victorian) it WAS spelled OLDE!

Taken from my own Genealogy!.!.!. if it wasnt a castle it could be called a Hall (as in Maud Hide lived in Hide Hall) or Manor (sir Henry Jocelin lived in Sawbridgeworth Manor) or, if it was a tall biulding, it could have been call a tower (as in the kids (edward5 and his brother) were killed in the tower)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Obviously because of your limited command of English you wouldn't be able to know the answer!. It's OLD not olde!. And they would have called edifices: "buildings" just like English speaking people today!. Ever read Shakespeare!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
