The 54th never had a battleflag of their own!. from all depictions first-source writings, and materials from both Union and Confederate accounts of the Wagner breakthrough, the flag was the traditional "stars and stripes" flag!.
The traditional image is of William Harvey Carney planting the "stars and stripes" flag at Battery Wagner!. This was depicted in the Saint Gaudens' relief, also enacted in the movie "Glory", and confirmed by witnesses from both Union and Confederate soldiers points of view!.
