It is true what the others have said about Will wanting to show dominance and trying to provide an efficient method for containing local riots and punishment issues but what i was led to believe was that because of the size of his army after the battle of Hastings was small compared to neighbouring countries army!. Will had to find a fast, cost effective and defencive form of protection from the vast hordes eager to take England whilst her guard was down!.

cheaper than paying for a bigger army as he could easily force Saxons to do it for free and he wouldn't need to pay foreigners for their raw materials because England had and still has everything it needs to make a lovely castle!. Wills priorities were mainly in finance and that's proven in books, scriptures and how wen he invaded England was kick started into a new era but i going a bit far into this now so there you go Www@QuestionHome@Com

William I built the castles to insure that the local Saxon population could not challenge his rule in England!. Without them, his administrators would have been vulnerable to attack and his army would have to occupy every village to insure peace!. The construction of castles provided William I with strong-points from which he could station garrisons to defend England and enforce his rule!. If the Saxon's rebelled, they would have to capture these castles to force the Normans out, and the time necessary to besiege them would have taken so much time that William I could assemble a large field army from elsewhere in his kingdom and crush the rebels!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He followed the example of Alfred the Great in building a large number of relatively small castles to consolidate his power and maintain control!. The way they both did it was to quickly build a castle to garrison troops and also to have a standing army!. If any enemy tried to start trouble in the area the garrisoned force would wait in the castle until the army arrived!. When the army did arrive the garrisoned force would exit the castle and attack the enemy forcing the enemy to fight no just the army but the forces from the castle too!.

1066 you mean!. look of wikipedia!. i did this last yr so you may not want to trust all of this but you will get the besic idea!.well, if you think about the mote and bailey castle (the first type of his castles) was built on a hill, this was because if they had guards as the they were hig up they would spot the enemy from far away, so they would have time to defend themselves!. When he bagan to build stone castles these were also so he could defend himself! (he was at war)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well for a start, tea had not been introduced into England, so all those builders were able to throw up castles in the space of 1 year!.
