Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Prior to the industrial revolution!. the role of most women was that of wife, they learned skills useful to that end-minor medical cures, sewing and cooking!. The lower classes allowed women more freedom and work opportunities!. This meant cooking outside the home, nursing and educating youngsters as a nanny for a wealthy family!. Once the industrial revolution began taking root, women worked in factories and shops catering to women (dress makers)!. Eventually, women became more empowered; especially in the northern and western United States!. Women became school teachers, secretaries and professional nurses; but those were about the only acceptable jobs in polite society!. Once a woman married, she was expected to quit working and take up role of wife and mother!. Www@QuestionHome@Com Women fulfilled a variety of roles depending on their position in life!. It is not true to say that before the Industiral REvoluton women only became wives!. women had to earn a living in pre-industrial times as well!. Women worked in domestic service, in the textile trade, as shopkeepers, as teachers, as midwives, and in various other occupations!. Moreover, in pre-industrial times, beinga housewife required a range of complex skills, since many items had to be produced at home instead of being bought!. However, in the course of the 1800s, employment opportunities for women expanded!. A lot of women went to work in th enew factories that were built for instance!. And the expansion of the public schools system led to many more women being employed as teachers!. From the 1850s, nursing became a respectable job for women, due to the reforms in hospitals and the nursing profession implemented by Florence Nightingale!. The Civil War led to a lot of women finding employment in government jobs and offices, filling positions vacated by men!. After the Civil War, they continued to work in offices in greater numbers!. The invention of the typewriter encouraged the employment of women, since it was found that women made better typists!. And the new deparetment stores employed a great many women as sales clerks!. Women's eductional prospects also improved during the course of the century!. There were more schools for girls, and from the 1870s ownards, women began to go to college!. By 1880, they made up a third of the student population in the USA!. Women also gained more legal rights, the married women's property act gave married women control of their own property (formerly, when a woman married, her property became her husband's)!.
