Question: What British city suffered the most during the Blitz!?
Where I live (Manchester) suffered quite badly and I know that London, Coventry and Bristol suffered extremely badly, but in what order (by damage scale) did the cities suffer!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The History Today Companion to British History says that London had the largest share of the raids, with a third of the old City being destoryed, and extensive damage to the East End!. Almost all major ports and cities suffered attacks, particularly Plymouth, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield!. The raid on Coventry on 14 November 1940 destroyed the heart of the city and killed over 600 people!.

I looked at a couple of interent sites, one said that Liverpool was the most heavily bombed city after London, and the other said that Birmingham was, so there is evidently some competition for the title!. I know the centre of Plymouth was completely destroyed by the raids!.

The town where I live, Dover, was so heavily bombed it was known as 'Hellfire Corner', but it is a small place compared to Liverpool, Coventry etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Total tons of bombs dropped was London, but if you look at bombs dropped per square mile, Bootle in north Liverpool docks has been described by some historians as the most heavily bombed area in the country!.

After the 'May' blitz only 15% of residential housing was left standing in Bootle

If you go to Bootle now there is much of it which has still not been rebuiltWww@QuestionHome@Com

I've always heard it was Coventry--it was the most totally destroyed, because there wasn't as much of it to bomb; the damage that was inflicted was almost total therefore!. On the other hand measured in sheer quantity it would have to be London!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
