Question: In the UK, some shops close on a Wednesday afternoon and have done for as long as i was aware!. Why!?
I noticed since i was young, it seems that many small shops close on a Wednesday!. I remember hearing something years ago about it was traditionally the day for sport in the afternoon but wether thats true or not is a different story!.

I've lived all over the UK and half day closing on Wednesday is quite common!. It's usually to give staff time off as they have to work on Saturdays!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am not aware of that happening now!. It was the norm when I was a child (1960s)!. The reason is, as someone else has pointed out, to allow staff time off in the week in order to compensate for having to work on Saturdays!. I'd be surprised if it was still happening as many shops now open seven days a week and they work on a rota system!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was Wednesday in most places but also Thursday in a lot of places!. Known as half day closing day but I'm not sure if it was to do with sport!.

It wasn't even just small shops, when I was young everything seemed to close down for the half dayWww@QuestionHome@Com

In the old days half day closing was a market day for restocking your goods , and i suspect now it is more a rest period as most shops are open six or seven days a week ,Many years ago it was illegal to open on the Sabbath dayWww@QuestionHome@Com
