These are accurate from an American point of view!. But, since your question asks for the "factors [that] caused the war!.!.!." you need to appreciate Great Britain's position!. Britain had been fighting Napoleonic France since 1793!. In 1803 Napoleon began preparations for an invasion of Britain!. In 1805 at Trafalgar the Royal Navy soundly defeated the French and Spanish fleets, thus preventing Napoleon invading!. The French and Spanish fleets then remained in port!. What do you do with your navy if the enemy won't fight!? You blockade his ports to prevent war materials from reaching him!. That's what the Royal Navy did!. France was, at that time, America's most important trading partner, so this act alone caused the USA great economic distress!. Service in the Royal Navy at that time was harsh!. First rate ships of the line had a crew of around 800 men, most lived in cramped and poor conditions so desertion was rife!. That's why Royal Navy ships almost never put in to a foreign port!. Whilst the Navy were stopping ships trading with France they were also looking for deserters!. Anyone who spoke with what was obviously a British regional accent were arrested and impressed [back] into the Royal Navy!. At that time almost all serving American seamen had been born somewhere else, many in Britain!. It is without a doubt that many genuine American citizens were wrongly arrested and impressed into the Royal Navy as deserters!. It was this action that finaly drove the USA to declare war!.

Britain did attempt to use the Native Americans to help their cause, though the extent to which this was successful is doubtful!. Canada became an issue because Britain did not appear to take America's declaration of war seriously, this was because she still had her hands full fighting Napoleon!. It wasn't until 1814 that Britain sent land troops to attack America, though the US had been extremely successful in attacking British ships at sea from the word go!. It was this initial lack of response from Britain that led America to believe she could sieze some, or all, of Canada!. This, as much as anything, was what caused Britain to take the war seriously!.

Though America's revolutionary history causes American's to see every historical action of Britain as one of bullying Imperial heavyhandedness, this is not actually the case!. Britain was doing what she could to defend herself against Napoleon!. As so often is the case, her actions unwittingly drew the United States into the war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1812 June 1 - Madison war message to Congress

1!. impressment
2!. ships stopped off U!.S!. ports
3!. blockade
4!. Brit Orders in Council
5!. Indians

Madison's actions were in direct contradiction to Jefferson!. Madison tried diplomacy and economic pressure to end British invasions of US sovereignty rights, but in the end decided that war was the only response left!. Jefferson did nothing but further diminish US prestige in the eyes of other nations!.

Madison attempted to prepare the US military for a possible fight before the war broke out, while Jefferson actively destroyed the US Army and Navy!.

Jefferson also destroyed the ability of the US government to finance itself and the prosecution of possible wars by his imbecilic economic policies!. English and France are taking are merchant ships on the high seas or in their ports, well fine, then we will keep our ships in port and not trade with anyone!. - Jefferson's Embargo policy

Sounds like a petulant 2nd grader on the play ground who not having his own way decides to take his ball and go home rather than a man of character!.

To go further down this line of reasoning, when Jefferson took his ball and went home due to the actions of Britain and France, Britain followed him home, kicked open the door, beat him up and took the ball from Jefferson and all Jefferson did was cry like a baby and wet his pants in protest!.
