Question: Why did Britain rescue Poland from one tyrant, but not the other!?
Everyone knows Britain went to war over Hitler's invasion of Poland, but why not Stalin's occupation at the end of the war!?
For Poland the war did not end in 1945, but in 1989 when the Berlin wall came down and occupation ended!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Politics!.
The post war areas of occupation and influence were agreed at the Yalta conference!.
Roosevelt was a sick man and gave in too easily to Stalin's plans much to the dismay of Churchill who was left in a minority of one!.
After the war Britain was to exhausted and bankrupt to do anything to change the situationWww@QuestionHome@Com

at the end of the war, the allies decided to split eastern european countries amongst themselves!. Poland being next to Russia was annexed to them!. The allies decided that Russia was best kept quiet by giving them what they wanted (Poland/Bulgarian/east germany/Hungary/Czech) It was generally agreed that the west had had enough fighting over things and decided that it was simplier to use the Eastern European countries as bargaining to keep Stalin happy!. and besides if Russia kicked off, the conflict would be on there own doorstep in Poland and not in say France!. Thats it in a nut shell, but it's really mush more complexed than this!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't like your phrasing, that war was not just as simple as one nation playing the hero and the other being the "damsel in distress"!. The victory was a common effort of many nations!. And as far as the alliances did play a role, the main reason for war was the threat Hitler was for the rest of Europe, including Great Britain!. It just became clear that peace can't be bought by letting the Nazi Germany to seize other countries, as it was the matter with Czechoslovakia!. And I'm not telling this out of spite, it's just how the politics was!.
Yes, I do know I'm simplifying too, but that's an extensive subject!.
The same about Yalta!. Yet putting it simply, what the others said here is right!. The war had been long and exhausting for the nations partaking in it, Roosevelt was weak (he died not long afterward) and also wanted USSR's assistance in the war with Japan!. also, he believed Stalin would keep his promises about Poland (free elections there), but these hopes were vain!. He didn't realize what kind of man Stalin was and also hoped USSR could be dealt with via United Nations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was prearranged with Stalin!. That way they could get the Russians into the war and cause Germany to fight, and lose on two fronts!. And, there was just not much anyone could do about Russian occupation!. Remember, by that time people were tired of war and wanted peace, at any price, again!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

good question; I think the war lasted too long and the western countries just wanted to see the end!.!.!. people were tired and seeing Hitler dead they just said ufff, lets get back to normality!. Who cares about Poland and the other central - eastern european countries!.!.!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
