Im just wondering how did Hawaii and the united states become “friends” or supporters of eachother thank you[= Www@QuestionHome@Com Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It wasn't really very friendly!. We (the USA) took over the Hawaiian Islands in the 1890's in the interest of the white plantation owners!. It was a time of American Imperialism!. We felt that if we didn't take over these islands, another European country would!. Remember that Hawaii was not a state in 1941 at the time of Pearl Harbor!. There were only a couple of hotels in Honolulu, Oahu then!. The main industry on the islands was the plantation system - sugar and pineapples!. The original white settlers had been missionaries from New England in the early 1800's who brought Christian morality and multiple contagious diseases such as measles which decimated the population of non-immune native islanders!. Some of these whites became the land barons who owned the plantations and schemed to take over in the 1890's!. There are still native Hawaiians who are justifiably resentful that their land and culture were taken away from them!.
