Art and success are two different phenomenon!. Great artists are not always successful!. Equally, not all successful art is great!.

If Bob Dylan had been born a hundred years earlier, odds are no one would have noticed him!. That would have been even more so for the purely performing artists such as Elvis!. I'll bet that would also be true if they had been born a hundred years into the future!. Equally, there are great artists going completely unnoticed at any given moment in history!.

An art must meet with an audience in the exact frame of mind to appreciate their art in order to have success of this magnitude!. What achieves popularity one year may totally flop the following year!. The art is a singular phenomenon!. One artist creates one work of art at a time!. Success is when millions of people covet that work of art!. The art is of the artist!. Success is of the people!.

What inspires millions of people to agreement on the quality of a work of art!? There would be the great mystery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He didn't become a great aritist, he was BORN a great artist!. He was lucky enough to discover his talent and he honed it over the years!. Bob Dylan, and many more of his era were great aritists because they had TRUE talent, as opposed to many of our current artists, who are refined by voice processors and admired simply because of their looks and charismatic personalities!. Years ago, videos weren't near as popular and a singer's looks didn't really matter because we would only "hear" them on radio!. Now, we see them all over television, and apparently, ugly people just can't sing anymore!. American is obsessed with youth and beauty, so the producers sacrifice voice quality for looks!. This is why so many current artists have the looks, but don't really sound so good; especially when sound-studio magic is absent during live performances!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, you're wrong, and your answer is based upon an impossible notion of "greatness!."

1!. In his narrow but profound world, there is no one who is as good Bob Dylan!. Some of his songs are so original, fully realized, and inventive--verbally, especially--that they achieve a focus and concentration no one else's does: "Ballad of a Thin Man," "Absolutely Sweet Marie," "Desolation Row," "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Stuck Inside of Mobile!." They have exciting distinctiveness, humor, force, and focus, and they sound like no one else!. No one else is talented just that way!. Although not college educated, he is a very smart man and knows just how to use his talents!.

2!. As you point out there are other talented people, but the great ones are each talented in their own special ways!. Bob Marley is as distinctive as Dylan, but he is different!. It's pointless to compare them in terms of "greatness!." Each is great in his own way!. When I listen to one of these, say Elvis Costello, I don't say, oh I wish I was listening to John Lennon!. If I really wanted to do that I would listen to John Lennon!.

And all of these are more themselves and more musically or verbally gifted than many other people who aspire!. Just listen to your average bar band in wherever you live!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
