A vassal was kind of like a slave!. Not as bad as slavery of blacks up to Civil War!. Another name for vassal is serf!.

A lord or man of nobility was given land by the king or queen!. It was his to control!. The lord would give plots of land to average people, to farm the land, and they would pay a tax of a portion of what they would grow and give to the Lord to eat!.
But they also would pledge to be part of his army if he ever need one!.
Many times, the wars they'd fight were not with other countries, but against nearby lords!. Like gang leaders fighting turf wars!.

The Lord had complete rule of his land; his word was law!.
But eventually, in England, the role of the vassal became elevated, when thru the Magna Carta, every man who owned land was given rights of property and laws to protect him from evil lords!.
It was the Magna Carta which was the forerunner of the US's Bill of Rights in its Constitution!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
