Republicanism is a belief in "the public" and the public good!. In this case (1770), it is juxtaposed to liberalism -- individualism and the individual's rights!.

Rousseau was a republican!. John Locke and Adam Smith were very much liberals (they, along with Kant, formed capitalist theory)!. Smith even went so far as to say that what's good for the individual is good for society (today we call this "trickle-down")!.

The term "republican" has nothing to do with today's Republican Party in the US!. In fact, today's conservatives are yesteryear's liberals; today's conservatives are neoliberals!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I wasn't around in 1770, but I can tell you what it is today!.

Very simple: The Republican philosophy is: "I got mine, to hell with you!"

That philosophy is why Wall Street is in the mess it is! Www@QuestionHome@Com
