it has been said that "the historian who searches for examples of Intelligent and tolerant statesmanship in the period 1850-1854 seeks almost in vain" Citing the "statesmanship"of men like clay, Douglas, Webster,Calhoun, Pierce, and Filmore!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it is!. Since Clay, Douglas, Webster, Calhoun and Fillmore were all willing to compromise (they were all instrumental in negotiating the Compromise of 1850) to get what they want, it shows that they were intelligent!. Tolerant is another matter all together!.
