Question: Why did Sir Francis Drake, one of England's "sea dogs" become a hero in England and "El Dragon" in Spain!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Drake was the first Englishman to sail round the world which made him a big hero!.

England and Spain were HUGE enemies throughout Elizabeth's reign!. Drake would raid Spanish ship and take their gold both from ships near England and in the New World!. So to the Spanish he was a pirate!. Elizabeth really, really liked money so this was one way to win favour and get a knighthood!.

Before the Spanish Armada even left Spain Drake led a raid on Cadiz where he "singed the king of Spain's beard" (think that is Drake's own phrase) by torching ships that were waiting there to attack England!. It took over a year for the Spanish to build enough ships to try again!.

When the Armada was heading for the coast Drake was one of the commanders responsible for harrying the Spanish ships making the Armada break up which in turn sent the ships in all differing directions and thus ending the threat of invasion by the richest and most powerful nation in the world!. At that time England was a small island nation so this was a real achievement for her and embarrassment at best for Spain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sir Francis Drake was a english pirate who was hired by England to raid Spanish Ports and take over Ships of the spanish!.
He also was one of the captains to stop the Spanish Armada from taking over england!. He destroyed their fleet by flame ships landing in them!.
I think the reason why spanish called him el dragon is because dragons bring greed and destruction to a country and that's exactly what he did!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
