Hi !
Since there were so few infantrymen who survived to write memoirs information is sparse !. You may be interested in several perspectives which were fictionalized in films such as "Letters From Iwo Jima" and the anime film "Grave of the Fireflies" !.
"Letters From Iwo Jima" (A companion film to "Flags Of Our Fathers")!. ;

"Plot
In the present day, Japanese archaeologists explore tunnels on Iwo Jima!. They find something in the dirt and the scene changes to Iwo Jima in 1944!. Private First Class Saigo, a baker conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army, and his platoon are grudgingly digging beach trenches on the island!. Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi arrives to take command of the garrison and immediately begins an inspection of the island defenses!. He saves Saigo and his friend Kashiwara from a beating for having uttered 'unpatriotic speeches' and orders the men to stop digging trenches on the beach and begin tunnelling defenses into Mount Suribachi!."
"Grave of the Fireflies" ;

"Plot
Taking place toward the end of World War II in Japan, Grave of the Fireflies is the poignant tale of the relationship between two orphaned children, Seita (清太) and his younger sister Setsuko (節子)!. The children lose their mother in the firebombing of Kobe, and their father in service to the Imperial Japanese Navy, and as a result they are forced to try to survive amidst widespread famine and the callous indifference of their countrymen (some of whom are their own extended family members)!."

Japanese strategy for combat at Iwo Jima was:

1!. The Japanese didn't fight above ground!. They fought the battle entirely from beneath the ground!. They dug 1,500 rooms into the rock!. These were connected with 16 miles of tunnels!.

2!. Japanese strategy called for "no Japanese survivors!." They planned not to survive!.

3!. Japanese strategy was for each soldier to kill 10 Americans before they themselves are killed!.

Tho' they were totally dedicated to dying for their cause and taking as many of the Allied soldiers as possible with them, it is difficult to believe that they were not just as scared and miserable as the US troops!.

There is an article about a Japanese survivor of Iwo Jima that might be of interest to you at: http://www!.wtopnews!.com/!?nid=105&sid=148!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They felt cowardly on iwo
They could not live up to the expectations of their masters so they killed themselves instead of fighting to the death or surrendering to fight another day!.
on the first part of your question,
They were as you or I believing they were more right than wrong and building a new order or preserving the old!. (with their blood)
By the way, none of our enemies are totally wrong!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

watch "Letters from Iwo Jima", man it would answer your question PERFECTLY!!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com
