The word "Norman" comes from "Norseman", which denotes "north"!. Yes, like the Goths, Visigoths, Russ, Franks, Gauls, Therungians, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Lombard(i)s, and many others, they were Teutonic/Germanic people who all originated from Scandinavia, and settled in part every nation of Europe!. We have no way of knowing exactly what the Normans predominant feautures were as individuals, but can be confident they looked very much like the peoples of western Europe do today, simply smaller in stature due to less nutrition in that period!.

Note to "Roderick": Danes are themselves Germanic/Teutonic people, like all Scandinavian people of the time!.!.!. the only notable exception being the 40,000 or so Saami/Lapp peoples across Scandinavia (living in Sweden, Norway - but not Iceland and Denmark) as well as Finland and Russia, who are of separate indigenous stock related to the Finnish/Korean/Turkic/Mongol linguistic and genetic origins!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Broadly; first the original inhabitants, about whom we know little, except that they built Stonehenge!.

Then the Celts, who settled around 1200BC!. They became the Britons!.

The Romans invaded in the first century AD, and hung around for about three hundred and fifty years!.

The Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, three Germanic tribes, settled in the period AD 400-550!. Anglo-Saxon England was divided up into seven kingdoms!.

The Danes (Vikings) settled from the mid ninth century!. King Canute (reigned 1016 - 1035) was Danish!.

The Normans (who were, themselves, descendants of Vikings who had settled in France) came in 1066!.

Incdientally, the French are (in part, at least) descended from the Franks - another Germanic tribe - that invaded Gaul around AD600, so they're German too!.

And before the Franks, yet another Germanic tribe - the Visigoths - passed through Gaul and settled in what is now Spain!.

EVERY nation is rather mixed up, if you analyse things!.

The Normans, another Germanic Tribe, also came and settled in England, leaving an influence on the English Language!.

The Normans were a Viking Tribe from Norway, who first settled in a French coastal area, which became known as Normandy!. The Normans then migrated to England, later joining the Anglo-Saxons, during centuries past!.

The Norman union with the Anglo-Saxons had an influence on the English Language, many centuries ago!.

Normandy was the zone for the U!.S!., British, and Canadian D-Day Invasion on June 6th, 1944, of Main Land Europe, during World War Two!. Normandy was also one of the key German defense zones of Continental Europe during World War Two, called the Atlantic Wall!.
