The speech transformed Gettysburg from a scene of carnage into a symbol, giving meaning to the sacrifice of the dead and inspiration to the living!.

The answer above has the right idea - Lincoln doesn't mention any proper names in the Address!. It isn't about "Union" or "Confederacy" or even "Gettysburg" - he's making the occasion a symbol for something much larger!.

The key to the speech is "all men are created equal!." Lincoln is telling America that it is to be rededicated to equality in a new way, one that compares with what Jefferson was trying for in the Declaration!. This requires a "new birth of freedom!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
