Question: Was John Smith really the hero that the movie Pocahontas made him out to be!?
I know that she didn't really fall in love with him she married John Rolfe but i guess that's another story!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes and no!. Yes he saved the Jamestown settlement from starvation!. But he was also an accomplished liar!. Most historians conclude that Pocahontas never saved him from death!. Historians believe that he dreamed up the story after she made her debut in England with her husband and was a big hit in the royal family!. So I guess he's a hero who has his faults!. In December 1607, while negotiating provisions for the colony, Smith was captured by Powhatan, the Algonquian chief!. Smith claimed his life was spared through the intervention of the chief's daughter Pocahontas!. But many historians believe Smith either misunderstood or sensationalized a formal adoption ceremony!.

Tensions between Smith and the colony's other leaders prompted him to return to England in October 1609!. He never returned to Virginia, but he later traveled to New England, and he also published several books and maps on the New World!.

Yes and no!. He did save the Jamestown colony by making everyone work for food, and he kept interest in the colony alive through publications, but he also did quite a bit of exaggeration!. We have no way of telling if he accomplished everything he claimed to have done, but he was certainly an interesting individual and worth reading more about!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
