Question: As a rule, did men in the American West 1850-1900 really down their whiskey in one!?
Or is it just a Hollywood cliché!?

I was watching a western film the other evening and it suddenly struck me - did they really always knock it back in one shot like that!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's not that unusual!. Consider that the whiskey in Western bars was probably not fine sipping whiskey!. They had no ice and no mixes!. The best way to get the buzz and get past the taste was to toss it back!.
Quick draws and fanning pistols is mostly Hollywood!.
Tossing back shots is probably realistic!.
As the answerers above say, people still do that today!.
It's fairly standard for tequila!.
As far as "always" drinking like that - probably not every person!.
In some western movies you will see the actors nurse their drinks!. Of course they are drinking tea or some non-alcoholic beverage that looks like whiskey in the movies!.
Watch the 1991 movie "Silverado" sometime and observe the whiskey drinking!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They still do, sometimes with a beer chaser!. There are also "sippin" whiskeys, which are to be savored, like scotch, Chivas Regal, Gentleman Jack, Crown Royal and others!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
