What is The battle of Dien Bien Phu!?
who were the people fighting!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The French established a big army outpost at Dien Bien Phu, basically in the middle of nowhere, next to a Mountain range that they figured was inaccessible!.
Communist forces or Viet Mihn, dismantled artillery guns and hauled them by hand up the mountains and re-assembled them there!. They were then able to shell the French base at will and there was nothing the French could do about it because, tactically, it is almost impossible to attack an enemy who is dug in to a mountain range from the plain!. The battle went so badly for the French, who were still recovering from WW2, that they abandoned their interest in Vietnam!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From Shmoop History on the Vietnam War

http://www!.shmoop!.com/player/history/us/!.!.!.

Vo Nguyen Giap (1912- ) is a Vietnamese military commander most revered for his role in liberating Vietnam from French colonial rule!. Giap also led the armies of North Vietnam during the war against the Americans and the South!. Since the fall of Saigon in 1975, he has served as Vietnam's minister of defense and as deputy prime minister!.

In 1954, General Giap led the Viet Minh army in the decisive battle at Dien Bien Phu, crushing French colonial forces and bringing an end to the Franco-Vietnamese War!. After the war, Giap remained commander in chief of the People's Army of Vietnam!. He was largely responsible for the 1968 Tet Offensive, a major catastrophe in which Giap lost some 37,000 fighters!. Still, his campaign proved to the United States that Communist forces remained aggressively determined to achieve victory!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That is where the French, trying to subjugate more people, were cornered in a military base name Dien Bien Phu!. The Vietmanese made complete idiots out of them and drove them out of Vietnam!. Foolishly, under Kennedy and Johnson, the US decided to prevent the communists from taking over since they pretty much slaughtered the French!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

~Try this little exercise!.

First, cut the top line of your question!.
Second, paste same into a search engine
Third, hit "enter" or click on "search"
Forth, select any of the myriad of hits you just produced
Fifth, open same
Sixth, and this is the really tuff part, read the damned thing you just opened!.

Now, for some fun, read about how FDR had allied the US with Ho Chi Minh and General Giap and the Viet Minh in 1940, back when we called Uncle Ho a patriot, a freedom fighter and a nationalist hero and how our support of them was one of the reasons that the Japanese had no choice but to bomb Pearl Harbor!. Then read about how FDR stabbed Ho and the Viet Minh in the back at Yalta and Potsdam!. Next, read about how Harry Truman compounded that treachery on the Missouri in Tokyo Bay in 1945, and then again in 1946!. That will bring you to Ike and the double- cross of Ho by Ike in 1954 and then Ikes violation of the 1954 Geneva Peace Accords in 1956!. That might give you some inkling of understanding why Uncle Sam was (is) hated in Southeast Asia and why the Vietnam War was not only pointless but was caused by the US!.

Compare all that to what really went down in Iraq and Afghanistan and ask yourself, "How could we let our own government to this very same thing to us again, in the same way, after such a tiny span of time!?"

Hopefully, that will inspire you to use the net to read things like declassified US government and CIA documents, rather than the drivel that you get on sites like YahooAnswers!. At least, for the sake of my children and grandchildren and my country, I hope it will!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
