Boys have been part of the armed forces for centuries!. Long before the civil war!. They were used to carry powder to the guns (powder monkeys) and to play the drum!. Boys as young as 9 were recruited into the army, and especially the navy, where, famously, Admiral Nelson began his military career aged 12!.
Young men wouldn't need any particular skill - they were trained in the arts of war, in marksmenship, or how to man a cannon, or how to ride - depending on the regiment - infantry or cavalry!.
