Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Very dirty and dusty !. Except the dust would have been flammable !. The small fibers of cotton would settle in hidden and exposed areas creating fire hazards , without having proper fire exits or suppression systems!. Very dangerous surroundings!.
The only modifications to the machinery would have been to increase production , disregarding safety all together!.
Most factories were located in the northeast , although the rough cotton was supplied from the south!.
There were many children and women (Millgirls) working at these facilities , and little care was given for their safety and prosperity!. Most likened their treatment to that of slaves!. They were not far off!.
They would have been dimly lit by oil lamps (as any windows would be obscured by filth) adding to the fire hazard!. Steam powered equiptment would have produced much pollution in the form of smoke and noise!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
