It was done in the South up until the 1960s with Martin Luther King!. Usually white southerners will find a "*****" who had done something wrong (stayed out past curfew, drank from a public white fountain, very minor and harmless things) they will take him out and hang him by the neck from a tree and leave him there for a few days!.

Groups like the KKK held lynchings on a regular basis

Th local authorities were usually racists and turned the other way!. In the 1900s this really only happened in small towns!.

Sometimes they used lynchings as social gatherings!. you can see women and kids in a few pictures!. The most eerie are when they are smiling!.
It was called "strange fruit" in 1939 song that Billie Holiday sang!. This brought it national attention!.

Sometimes whites would hang whole families of african americans who had done nothing wrong!.

Here's some pictures!. Its pretty brutal

The problem with lynching was that the accused criminal was not tried in a court of law!. They were usually accused by a group of people that had one point of view - not necessarily a view that conformed with the law or the accepted norm!.

Therefore, lynching could have occurred in error and/or with prejudice!. It was meant to set an example, punish and even exterminate!. Once a lynch mod was gathered, majority rule took over and even if a person pleaded their case to the mob, the argument was usually in vein! Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lynching is and was an act of terrorism!. The whole purpose was and is to instill fear into the people you wish to silence or control!. Vigilantes used it to stop people from committing crimes!. Raciest used it to keep those whom they hated silent and under their control!. It also had the effect of making the lyncher fell superior to their victim's!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

How sad it is what one human will do to another under the influence of bigotry, hatred, and wrong attitudes!. To lynch or hang someone for really no reason and then try to justify it as being rightful!. Makes me happy I know the true god and his ways!. He would never accept these acts!. Those who committed them and say they are Christian are only fooling themselves and showing no love for God or fellow man!. They are just plain wrong!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Simply put, lynching is a hanging based on accusations, sometimes with supposed witnesses but without a fair and legal trial!. Lynchings were done by vigilanty groups primarily in the old West and in the South by groups like the Ku Klux Klan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Murder without a trial!.

The old west was known for it but not sure how real it was!. Old westerns show it all the time!. Even in the movie, Lonesome Dove, Tommy Lee Jones lynched Robert Urick for steeling horses!.

The other answers were good and right also!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
