The U!.S!. funded the military coup in Chile and economically strangled Chile so that Allende's government could not succeed, further setting the stage for a successful coup!. Augusto Pinochet, one of the worst war criminals of all time, as well as others in the Chilean military were even trained at the Georgia-based School of the Americas (see this link: http://www!.soaw!.org/article!.php!?id=234)!.
