The causes were that people in the North didn't want slavery to spread to new states and wanted to eliminate it because it is immoral!. The people in the south depended on the labor for their economy!. Someone changed the law to allow new states to decide for themselves and Kansas became the place where blood was first drawn!. After Lincoln was elected, some states left the Union!. He tried to restore the Union but found he had to change the rules to eliminate all slavery to keep the Europeans out!. Lincoln was killed and a southerner Johnson took over as president!. He gave power back to the rich whites and Negroes were oppressed for another 100 years!. That is the short story!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A very misunderstood conflict!. Many reasons for the war, but slavery, in and of itself, was not the major cause!. Before the war, states were considered "free and independent states" who were allowed to develop their own laws and institutions, even "peculiar" ones such as slavery!. Northern states would have been every bit as resentful had the Federal government attempted to interfere in their right to govern!. The North and South had developed into two very different cultures!. The South was aristocratically governed while the North was more egalitarian!. The economies were much different; the North was very industrialized while the South relied on trade and plantations!.
The legacy could have been much better had the North not imposed such an oppressive occupation during "reconstruction"!. The resentment and frustration in the South was often directed at the most obvious target they could find: the former slaves that the abolitionists
in the North used politically to punish the South's" transgressions!. It was an In-Your-Face attitude and "punishment" that the North used that led to so much violence against Southern Blacks!. The Southern whites were not by nature, morally reprehensible people!. Most people in the South did not hold slaves but had to suffer the same fate as those who did!. Slavery was so institutionalized that even some "free" blacks held slaves, evidence that slavery was not necessarily a
racially-justifiable institution!. The outcome of attempting to revolutionize a society overnight has worse consequences than allowing it to crumble and fade away naturally, witness the outcome of
China's "Cultural Revolution" and Pol Pot's "Agrarian Culture" movement in Cambodia!. By the time the North eased up on it's occupation the damage had been done: The KKK was well-established
and "Jim Crow" laws were on their way!. One Hundred and Forty Three years later and we're still paying for the Civil War!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

States' rights, or the lack thereof!. The Confederate states wanted states rights!. The Union states wanted a stronger Federal government!.

The legacy is with us!. Just check out the size of our Federal government!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
