Since National History Day is an intensive process, you really need to pick a topic that YOU are truly interested in!. There are plenty of people who I can name, but you won't be excited to research that person unless you care about the topic!. Go about the process backwards!. Think of a subject or topic you are interested in, then look for people who are influential to that topic!. You should go back a bit in history!. Current people are not a good choice, as their impact and legacy is not yet apparent or established!. Once you focus on a person, then you can apply your interest to that person to narrow your research to that impact!.

For example, I could throw out FDR, but that is too broad!. However, you could be interested in the Depression, or communication, or war, or diplomacy, or medicine!. If you were interested in those you could look at FDR's achievements in the New Deal, or the impact of his Fireside Chats in reassuring Americans, or his war decisions, or how he was instrumental in creating the UN, or his struggles with polio and how that changed him!. Or then again, you could be interested in women's issues and suddenly decide to look at Eleanor Roosevelt and some aspect of her life and impact!.

That's why you need to figure out what interests you and tailor your topic choice around that passion!. Otherwise it becomes a chore!.
