They fought on BOTH sides!. African-Americans made up about 10% of the Union Army!. A few also served on the Confederate side, in the promise of gaining their freedom!.

Slaves were employed in the south in support of the war effort!. Some free black men served in the Confederate army!.
When slaves had the opportunity they fled to union lines and freedom!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
