Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's the Missouri Compromise line of 1820!. It was 36°30' north latitude!. It really didn't divide all the slave states from the free states!. That line is actually the Northern borders of Virginia (West Virginia was part off Virginia back then), Kentucky, Texas, and Maryland!. also, Northern, Western, and Eastern boundries of Missouri!. Oh, the boundaries of Delaware count as well!. It was a slave state!. I don't know why!. I think they never really had any need for slaves, and just never saw the need to get rid of slavery since it barely existed!. In fact, they had some of the best white / free black race relations in the nation!. Go figure!. The compromise line was actually the Southern border of Missouri!. Missouri was allowed to come in as a slave state on the agreement that no other new slave territories would be allowed North of its Southern Border!. Anything South would be Slave Territory!. The agreement only applied to those territories in the Louisiana Purchase!. The Southwest would not be acquired until after the Mexican War of 1846-48!. This really screwed things up!. Because of the gold rush of 1849, California became eligible to be a state in worlds record time!. It wanted to be one free, state!. The problem is that the compromise line runs right through the middle of California!.Www@QuestionHome@Com At first it was the southern border of Pennsylvania, also called the Mason-Dixon line!. But that line allowed slaves in states on either side of it but there was were gradually increasing restrictions on slavery in those states north of the Mason-Dixon line!. Later it was the Missouri Compromise line of 1820 that attempted to keep the balance of power between slave and non-slave states in the Senate!. Some in the south sought to increase the number of slave states by sending a band of soldiers to some countries in Central America and try to make them slave states of the South somewhat like was done with Texas!. That tactic didn't work!. Gradually the south realized that they had run out of options and that eventually there would be more non-slave states and that the institution of slavery was doomed if they remained in the union!. That realization led to the Civil War when they attempted to go their own way!.
