He was the first republican President who limited the government's power in order to increase state rights & american liberty!. He still let the national bank finish out its 20 year term until 1811!. He believed in STRICT interpretation of the constitution (meaning we should only use stated rights/powers when absolutely necessary), pro-french, liberty, & independence!. LOUISIANA PURCHASE- big success, gained vast territory for America from French ruler, Napoleon (wary at first since foreign purchase would be loose interpretation of the constitution but ended up approving) & helped to increase westward expansion & trade success!. He kept the nation at PEACE!. Brought back "Spirit of 1787"- idea of declaration of independence & liberty!.
LIBERTY rather than ORDER!.

He had an extremely successful first term in presidency!.
His second term was ruined when he passed the Embargo Act of 1807 (banned trade with foreign countries) because it hurt the U!.S!. more than any other country and the Federalist party was revived as a result!
