Why are there so many masonic compass' engraved in buildings in Bendigo, Vic

Question: Why are there so many masonic compass' engraved in buildings in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia !?

like in all of the buildings i am seeing the compass' its weird as i no of at least 5 places in which u can see them
even the massive cathedral has one engraved on the side of it Www@QuestionHome@Com

They are the tools of their profession symbolic in its meaning!. Freemasons were instrumental in the laying of the cornerstone of churches and public buildings, which still happens today!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I know its so wierd hey- there is this old masonic hall in my street (easily the biggest building)!.!.!. what do they do there lol!Www@QuestionHome@Com
