White people wanted land -- the Native Americans living on that land were an inconvenient obstacle!. Whites saw Native Americans as nothing more than sub-human heathen savages who didn't deserve to be treated as anything better than animals, so most whites had no qualms whatsoever about massacring the Native Americans, either in war or by deliberately spreading disease amongst them (ie:giving them trade blankets infected with smallpox, for example)!.

Under those circumstances, there were some who thought that the "humane" alternative was to persuade Native peoples to give up their ancestral lands and relocate to new lands away from encroaching white civilization (never mind that the new reservations for the Native Americans were some of the worst, least arable lands in North America, given to the Native Americans because whites didn't want it)!. Better to move to a desert reservation in the middle of nowhere than have the U!.S!. Army come in and slaughter your entire tribe, right!? Www@QuestionHome@Com
