1!. The term Barbarian in Ancient Rome referred to someone who was savage, uncivilised, brutal and primitive!. It was used to describe people who were less advanced with unacceptable behaviour compared to their society's ethics!.

2!. In 330 AD, Emperor Constantine the I segregated the Roman empire into two halves, declaring Constantinople the new capital city!. Paganism was the dominating religion, but Constantine was a devoted Christian, so he ended the persecution of his faithful companions, who were often pitched in gladiatorial arena's against fierce animals and professional combatants!. He set up the first council of Nicaea which was a meeting of bishops, priests and church leaders to spread Christian beliefs, attitudes and values!. Constantine passed away in 363 AD, but he was only partially influential in bringing change!.

Followers of Jesus preached in Roman provinces world-wide, attempting to convert the population!. The Pagan gods were still admired and worshiped however, until Emperor Theodosius the I officially banned Paganism in 391 AD!. Christianity was now made the official religion, as even public opinion had changed in favour of it!.

Romans described all people who weren't within the Roman empire as barbarians I think!.

Constantine I, in an effort to stop the disintegration of the empire due to the proselytising of the new religion (christianity) and the Arian heresy, created a unified, single religion with one set of scriptures at the council of nicea!. The assembled bishops etc!. decided what went in, and what didn't and this became the basis for Roman Catholicism, which was subsequently accepted as the state religion by the conversion of Constantine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
