Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The scars on his temples are from shock therapy where electrical currents are passed through the brain, it is considered to be useless now but some 'therapists' still preach its benefits!.

The procedure that left the Nickelson character 'Zombied out' was a Lobotomy, a particularly brutal procedure which involved inserting a specialised instrument nicknamed an 'ice pick' through the eye socket and using it to destroy the frontal lobe which effectively destroyed a persons personality!. In effect they are left a living breathing human shell with no ability for original thought!.

"In 1948, Norbert Wiener, the author of Cybernetics, said: "!.!.!.prefrontal lobotomy !.!.!.has recently been having a certain vogue, probably not unconnected with the fact that it makes the custodial care of many patients easier!. Let me remark in passing that killing them makes their custodial care still easier!."

Russia was the first country to outlaw the procedure in 1950 and the rest of the world followed suit as new drugs became available!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He receives a LOBOTOMY to the front area of his brain, know as the FRONTAL LOBE (1 of 4 lobes of the brain)!.
This lobe is responsible mainly for us being able to perform cognitive tasks and it also helps with our speech!.
However it is also believed to be the part of our brain that contains the characteristics for our PERSONALITY!.
THEREFORE, by REMOVING (or altering) this part of his brain doctors would have hoped for him to become SUBMISSIVE and CALM in his nature in comparison to his current 'reckless' personality that ended him up in the mental home (this, as you can see is what did occur)

Lobotomy!.
It's a scary thing and the brain won't work the same way again after that treatment!. You might even be like a "zombie" for the rest of your life if the process didn't work through!.
For more information, check out google or wikipedia!.
You should check out the book too (if you haven't), it a pretty good read, in my opinion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
