The neanderthals used close quater attacks to subdue their prey because unlike the homo sapiens they didn't have long range weapons like spears!. They wern't fast but they were excellent trackers and could stay hidden if they needed too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They were rather short and stooped with very muscular arms and legs, and had spears, bolas, and other weapons!. They were very strong, and lived as a team, so they were taught how to make the perfect hunting group!. Remember, they weren't absolutely primitive, they were Homo sapiens, but just a different sub-species than we are (They were Homo sapien neanderthalensis, not Homo sapien sapien)!. They didn't "leap upon their prey", they hunted, just like early homo sapien sapiens did!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since there is little evidence of Neanderthals having throwing weapons it is suggested that they leapt upon their prey!. However they may have used thrusting spears and clubs!.

There is also evidence that they drove game over cliffs or into swamps where they would die or be incapacitated!.

It is also thought that the Neanderthal knee joint was less flexible than those of Modern Humans, Meaning they would not be able to interact with Cro-Magnons in the hunt and were at a disadvantage to their more agile competitors!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
