Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Sir Walter Raleigh!.
He founded the "City of Roanoake!."
The colony failed at that location, and the colonists "disappeared" mysteriously!.
We believe that most of them died, and the rest moved inland, where they later died too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sir Walter Raleigh but the capt was John White!.
He tried to found the colony of Roanoke and he failed!. The story is here- known as the lost colony of Roanoke!. It is in Virginia but off the NC coast!.
It is a really sad story!. He brought women (his daughter who was pregnant) and regular civilian people to settle there, they had all sorts of problems: weather; Native Americans who were unfriendly (although some were); hunger, etc!.!.!. he went away to get supplies and he got stuck in England because they drafted him for a war with Spain!. He could not return until 3 years later and no one and nothing was left except a clue on a tree- the name of a local tribe!. It is thought that they somehow blended into the tribe but it is unknown for sure!. The story is important because his granddaughter was the first American baby born to English parents: her name was Virgina Dare!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
