"Sweeney Todd will never die!. We all need bogeymen and he was bogier than most!."
Respected crime historian and British journalist Peter Haining has written two books about Sweeney Todd - The Mystery and Horrible Murders of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979) and Sweeney Todd: The real story of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1993) which are definitely worth reading if you're interested in sorting the fact from the fiction!. Sweeney Todd is one of those characters in history whom we shall never be 100% sure whether he is purely fictional, or is based in fact - in a similar way to other infamous criminals of the day - Spring Heeled Jack and even Jack the Ripper!. Haining's books were controversial, as he argued that Sweeney Todd was a real historical figure who committed his crimes around 1800, was tried in December 1801, and was hanged in January 1802!. His books are a good read, but the facts have never been proven!. Even if Sweeney Todd was nothing more than an 'urban legend', aren't these usually grounded in fact somewhere down the line!?!?

from what I know he was purely fictional (created as a "penny dreadful" type story called "the string of pearls" which is way different then the musical!.!.!.) around 1846
Then his tale was turned into a broadway musical around 1979
though some people think that Sweeney todd was a real man, its more likely that he was based on an urban legend!.!.!. (there are many similar to his tale) or possibly a warped version of Jack the Ripper (who was real) (there has been no real evidence up to this point that Mr!. Todd was real!.!.!. including hanging records for the year he was supposedly hanged!.)
hope that helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, Sweeney Todd was real!. He was also known as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who 'dispatched' his customers and gave the remains to his (thought to be) mistress Mrs Lovett!. She cooked them up, made them into mince pies and sold them to an unsuspecting public!. (Can you imagine how they felt when the story came out)!? His life story was turned into a musical not so long ago!. Sorry I can't give sites of images!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A couple people think that he was an actual man and that he really did go around killing people, but nothing can be proven because there is no evidence; he is simply an urban myth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
