Question: Who was the first emperor to stop minting Denarius!?

Interesting question!.
The inflated value of the antoninianus or double-denarius first minted by Caracalla c 212 made it the cuckoo in the nest of the Roman monetary system!.
By the time of Gallienus, 253-68 it had become virtually copper and replaced all the other silver and copper coins, including the denarius!.
They were occasionally issued, however!. There are some very rare ones of the British usurper Carausius, 286-293!.
I think the Diocletianic reforms definitely swept the denarius away!. So I'd go for Diocletian, though some of his immediate predecessors (Claudius, Aurelian, Probus, Carus, Carinus) may not have minted any!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
