Question: Did Hitler rule Germany by popular support or by terror by 1939!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Hitler used a lot of terror tactics to eliminate opposition to him!. The SS ruthlessly broke up political party meetings, interrogated people late at night, interned, arrested and even executed anti-Nazis!. All political parties and trade unions were banned so there was no chance to organize open opposition!. The Gestapo hunted neighbourhoods for enemies of the state and snoopers made sure that private grumbling was not tolerated!. Out of fear most people kept silent and out of fear supported the Nazis!.

However, it is certainly wrong to assume that there were no supporters of the Nazis!. In fact, there were many Hitler fanatics among the young!. Members of the Hitler Youth were totally devoted to Hitler and they put their duty to the Fatherland above their families and other loyalties!. Children were indoctrinated at school and they tried talking their parents into worshiping Hitler!. Propaganda made sure that the people heard everything with a pro-Nazi slant and this made it impossible for them to hate the state!. also, Hitler had reduced unemployment and was rearming Germany!. This produced a feeling of national pride which helped win over more Nazis to Hitler!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually, neither!. Once he got into office (as part of a minority government), he basically seized all power and nobody had the gumption to oppose him!. So, it was more by popular sufferance than popular support -- and only the Jews were really terrorized!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

sadly, popular support!.!.!. although he never won a majority!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
