Italy- after the defeat of the Italian armies at Adowa in 1896, the Italians wanted to prove that they were a powerful nation

Japan- the Japanese realized that they would have to expand in order to survive!. During the Great Depression, the European countries increased their trade tariffs!. also the japanese controlled manchuria at this time, but the japanese ruler there i forget his name gave manchuria over to china under chang kai shek!. when the japanese protested this to the united states, nothing was done about it!.
